5 Free Things to Do in Marina del Rey for Black Friday (or How to Celebrate Buy Nothing Day)

For the last couple of weeks, all we’ve been thinking of is Thanksgiving: the guest list, the dinner, the pumpkin pie, the dreaded cleanup… and when the sun sets on Thanksgiving eve, what’s next? A nap? Of course you’ll need a nap—you have to wake up at 3 AM to get in line for Black Friday sales!

Unless, of course, you’d rather celebrate the anti-Black Friday, otherwise known as “Buy Nothing Day.” The big advantage of Buy Nothing Day is obvious: You can sleep in! And then, move through your day, conscious of the fact that you’re spending no money today. Nothing. Zilch. Nada. But what will you do if you can’t spend your hard-earned moolah for an entire day? No worries, we have the answer.

Here are five FREE things to do in Marina del Rey that won’t cost you a pretty penny.

1) Hang Out at the Beach

While the rest of your neighbors are battling a perfect stranger for a new 47-inch plasma screen, you could be sitting pretty in the middle of Mother’s Beach with a book, your yoga mat or a SUP board living the life of a free-spirited, tranquil anti-consumerist (for the day anyway).

2) Ride the Marvin Braude Bike Trail

Get active for Buy Nothing Day and bike the 22-mile trek down the Marvin Braude Trail. It’s gorgeous (you’re pedaling right by the Pacific almost the whole way) and so much better than spending hundreds of dollars in an overcrowded store. Don’t forget to bring lots of water—you don’t want to ruin the challenge and have to pay for water in the Palisades.

3) Picnic at the Park

It’s the day after Thanksgiving, so there are definitely leftovers just waiting to be transformed into picnic fare. Make some turkey sammies, grab a couple slices of pumpkin pie and walk over to Burton Chace Park with your BFF—it’s free, it’s relaxing and if you cooked up a good meal for the holiday, it will be delicious, too.

4) Host a Buy Nothing Day Party at Your MDR Pad

If you live at Esprit, The Tides & Waters Edge or another one of Marina del Rey’s awesome apartment communities, you have the perfect place to host a Buy Nothing Day party! Just invite other anti-shopping pals over, serve up Thanksgiving leftovers, play some board games—and rejoice in the kitsch of it all.

5) Get a Laugh: Be a Zombie Shopper

You may or may not get a laugh, but the Buy Nothing Day websites seem to regularly suggest this as a free activity. Go to the mall (be sure to park somewhere free so you don’t get dinged with mall parking fees), dress up as a zombie and shuffle from store to store mumbling “Buy Buy Buy.” Yeah, it’s a little silly. But it’s something free to do!
