5 Can’t-Miss Spring Time Events Coming Around Marina del Rey

The first day of spring is today (March 20th!) and the signs of this gorgeous season are already taking root all around Marina del Rey. The sun is beaming, nature is blooming and spring-style fun is beckoning from every corner. Make the most of it with a bike ride down Marvin Braude Bike Trail, a trip to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday, or a picnic at Burton Chace park this weekend. Those irresistibly inviting options are only the beginning of the spring scene, though—you’ll also find a slew of grand events coming up in the next couple months that celebrate the beauty, culture and fun that defines Marina del Rey (and our neighboring towns).

Here are five of our area’s best events to add to your calendar!

April 7th—Migration Celebration

Head to Ballona Discovery Park for this free, all-ages event, hosted by Friends of Ballona Wetlands. From 10 am to 2 pm, you and your family can meet live hawks and owls; take pictures with different birds; enjoy guided bird tours; hear live music and much more. There’s also plenty of distractions for kids, including a scavenger hunt, outdoor science lab, face painting and crafts. Address: 13110 Bluff Creek Drive, Playa Vista.

April 14th—Annual Kite Festival

On Saturday, April 14th, head up to the beach north of the Santa Monica Pier for the 7th Annual Kite Festival, hosted by the Otis College of Art & Design. This is an extraordinary event for kite lovers of all ages, but especially kids since every child will receive a DYI Kite Kit to build and fly. Local and global kite artists will also be there to show off their works in the air—creating a “gallery” in the skies of Santa Monica. The event will also feature sand sculptures; watercolor and painting workshops; “sumi & tetra” kite making instruction; and a lot more. It’s totally free to attend so come one, come all!

April 18th—Sunset Series Regatta Begins

If nautical excitement tickles your fancy, score a prime spot at Burton Chace Park or Fishermen’s Village to see the inaugural Sunset Series Regatta on April 18th. This weekly California Yacht Club sailing competition runs every Wednesday from 6 pm to 8 pm through September 5th—and it can definitely be fun to watch. The whole series is comprised of 20 races and the top performers will be invited to compete in the “King of the Hill” race in September.

May 19th & 20th—Marinafest/Discover Marina del Rey

Another MUST-GO this spring is the 2018 Marinafest & Discover Marina del Rey Day (don’t worry, we’ll be covering these more as the date grows nearer). This duo-event is quintessential Marina del Rey with two days of boat shows, music, historic tours, tall ships, really cool exhibits, action-packed demos, a wine/beer garden, kids’ activities and so much more. Stay tuned for many, many more details! Address: 13650 Mindinao Way, Marina del Rey.

Venice Spring Fling – May 19th

Yes, MarinaFest & Discover Marina del Rey fall on the same weekend, but you can still squeeze in a visit to the annual Venice Spring Fling (it’s just up the beach afterall!). So, plan to bike or walk up to the Venice boardwalk between 11 am and 7:30 pm for a great day of live music, dance, art, live painting, hula hooping, book signings, poets and more. Bonus info: They’ll also be collecting canned foods for the Westside Food Bank!
