5 Tempting Memorial Weekend Happenings In and Around Marina del Rey

Every season is a fantastic season when you live in Marina del Rey! But if we had to choose — obviously, summer wins our hearts every time. And this weekend, Memorial Day weekend to be exact, marks the unofficial start of summertime! And yes, that’s big cause for celebration.

Of course, we can’t forget that Monday, Memorial Day, is an important day to reflect and appreciate the unimaginable sacrifices of our U.S. veterans. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make a new slate of great memories in the days leading up to it. Not to mention, a lot of the weekend options happening in and around the Marina include discounts/special offers for veterans and active military…because honoring them is what it’s all about!

So, take a look at 5 can’t-go-wrong choices, ranging from barbecue opps and brunch cruises to huge fiestas and pool parties. You’ll have to agree — 2017’s Memorial Weekend is shaping up to be epic — and you won’t want to miss a moment.

Burton Chace Park — 13650 Mindanao Way • Mother’s Beach — 4101 Admiralty Way

Sure, it may not be blazing hot outside yet, but that doesn’t mean it’s not great weather for some open-air, do-it-yourself dining. Head to Burton Chace Park or Mother’s Beach for a barbecue or picnic! Get there early to score a barbecue or simplify by bringing your camping grill along to cook up some tantalizing goodies. For picnics, bring a blanket and a couple beach chairs — or if there are picnic tables available, set up your feast right there.

Marina del Rey — 13755 Fiji Way

As always, taking one of Hornblower’s fabulous cruises never gets old. For Memorial Weekend, they’ll have their popular KJAZZ Champagne Brunch cruises on both Saturday and Sunday (although Sunday’s is sold out), plus a special Memorial Weekend Supper Cruise happening on Sunday, as well. But that’s not all, folks! There’s a special Memorial Day Champagne Brunch Cruise on Monday, which features a two-hour cruise, a grand buffet, free-flowing champagne, relaxing music and stunning harbor views. All cruises offer a discounted rate for the military — just have a valid military ID.) Visit the Hornblower website to book online or call 310.301.9900.

Downtown Hermosa Beach — Pier Plaza, Hermosa Avenue and lower Pier Avenue

There’s no way you can get through a Memorial Weekend without being tempted by the awesomely fun Fiesta Hermosa in Hermosa Beach. Widely known as the “largest arts & crafts fair in Southern California,” this huge event goes on Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10 am to 6 pm and features two stages with a variety of tribute bands and other live music; over 300 artists showing off their crafts; a charity beer & wine garden (served by local “celebs” like the mayor!); a food court with over 18 different kinds of ethnic food options; a Kiddie Carnival for kids 3 to 10 years old; and a Petting Zoo, pony rides and more for the littlest visitors.

PS The festival is all about being green so feel free to cruise down on your bike and take advantage of their free bike valet services. You’re also encouraged to bring your own reusable bags to carry your purchases. PPS On May 27th, the festival will honor service men and women at 12 pm by the pier. Be sure to pay your respects and offer them thanks for all they do.
