August 21st, 2018

The wags, the licks, the goofiness, the love — is there anything more precious than a dog? If you’re a canine fan (and who isn’t?!), then you already know the answer to that question: Dogs are the tops! And Sunday, August 26th is the day we officially celebrate their greatness. National Dog Day is on the calendar in Marina del Rey and we have some WOOFTACULAR ideas to help you and your pup have the best day ever.

[By the way, if you don’t yet have a special pup in your life (but you’re ready for a lifelong commitment of love!)—find your soul mate at a local shelter or dog rescue, such as Much Love or Annenberg Pet Space.]

Go for a Walk!

A walk out in the open air with your pooch is always a winner in your dog’s eyes… plus, a nice stroll is good for you too! Around Marina del Rey, there are plenty of places to jaunt around with your best friend, like Burton Chace Park or Ballona Wetlands.

Organize a Pup Play Date!

If your dog is a regular social butterfly, then organize a pup play date on Sunday! Pack a doggy-friendly picnic, lots of fresh water (with bowls) and some toys, then meet up with his/her canine besties. Burton Chace Park is (once again) a great spot for some one-on-one dog fun. You could also go to Playa Vista’s awesome Bluff Creek Dog Park—they have space for small and large dogs, plus the play area is artificial grass instead of wood chips (that’s a big draw).

Check Out Spot’s Summer Games!

Healthy Spot just happens to be hosting their first-ever Spot’s Summer Games event at Burton Chace Park on Sunday—so if your dog loves to play, this could be a great way to celebrate NDD.

They’ll have trainers from Tully’s Training helping pups through all of the games, plus you can enjoy refreshments and a chance to win a gift basket. Remember to bring water and they recommend only one dog per human for game participation. The fun starts at 10 am. P.S. It’s free to attend—just register online.

Go Toy Shopping!

Aside from your dog’s birthday and holidays, National Dog Day is a great excuse to buy him/her a new toy or two. Go to one of the local pet supply stores like Healthy Spot, Unleashed by Petco or Centinela Feed and let your baby pick out something special for National Dog Day.

Grab Some Yummies Together!

Take your dog BFF out for a summery treat on Sunday! The Dog Bakery in Mar Vista has some amazing doggy baked goods. Or he/she surely wouldn’t object to a delightful scoop of French Vanilla at Cold Stone Creamery. If you want to go the full meal route, jet up to the great patio at Ashland Hill in Santa Monica and order your pal something off the divine doggy menu (may we suggest chicken over rice and an after-dinner pup-style ice cream?).

Make Time for the Snuggles!

The best part of having a dog is that they’re always down for a good nap and a snuggle. So, make sure after the play dates, the treats, the walks and the fun—you fit in some cuddle time (and tummy rubs) with your furry kid.

Are you celebrating National Dog Day? If you are, let us know how you and your pal will be spending the day!
