Nourish Your Body! It’s National Nutrition Month in Marina del Rey

Most of us know that nutritious foods on a regular basis helps us stay happy, healthy and fit. But we’re not super humans—we all have our nutrition kryptonite (like Girls Scout Cookies or Cadbury Eggs for instance). But this month—National Nutrition Month—is the time to overlook the temptations, get back on the nutrition track, and find your best nourishment options around Marina del Rey. And as always, we’re here to help with suggestions and ideas that will have you leaping into the spring season healthier than ever.

Getting your daily vitamins and antioxidants is as easy as hitting up one of the great juiceries around Marina del Rey. Some of the most beneficial ingredients to look for in your concoction are kale, spinach, blueberries, lemon, and ginger (to name a few!). Juice Infusion (103 Washington Blvd) has some awesome organic fresh press juices like their Oxygen Drink with green apple, kale, aloe vera, spinach, parsley, romaine, celery, cucumber, lime and ginger. If you have a sweet craving, try their Ruby Liquid with beets, pineapple, strawberry, red apple and ginger. Another Marina del Rey option is Juice Crafters (4260 Lincoln Blvd) where you can purchase a single wellness shot like their Flu Off mix of lemon, ginger and cayenne or go for one of their green cold press juices like the Greenest #3 (a blend of spinach, kale, romaine, cucumber, parsley, celery, apple, lemon and ginger). Of course, we can’t write about juicing favorites without mentioning Jamba Juice (4375 Glencoe Ave. Ste. D-4)…those smoothies are always calling our names but remember, vast amounts of sugar don’t exactly scream nutritious. So, stick to something with a lower sugar count like their Great Greens™ with cucumber, apple juice, spinach, kale, lemon and chia seeds (only 110 calories in 12 oz., 1.5 grams of fat and 17 grams of sugar—just a fraction of the sugar found in most smoothies).

So, a lot of you might have spent the weekend celebrating a New Orleans-style Mardi Gras with beads, drinks, music and zany costumes. And while that was certainly some big fun, you may have missed a little something. Ready for this? “Mardi Gras” actually means “Fat Tuesday” in French! And guess what today is? Yep, it’s Tuesday—FAT TUESDAY to be exact. Which means you have a little more celebrating to do, folks. Not in the form of beads and cocktails, but in the form of decadent feasting!

Now, we must remind you that the aforementioned Fat Tuesday (alternatively known as Pączki Day–see below) also falls in the middle of American Heart Month, so we’ll stress “moderation” on the feasting suggestion. However, having that one goodie that you’ve been dreaming about all year is totally encouraged today.

So, allow us to be the voice of temptation and highlight just some of the most decadent treats you can, well… treat yourself to in Marina del Rey. Enjoy…and remember, you can just do an extra hour of Pilates tomorrow. Happy Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday/Pączki Day!
