The holidays are upon us, and while most of us have the bases pretty much covered for an amazing holiday season— there’s always a few details we overlook as the eve grows near. Sure, we have the major stuff done like decorating and buying the big box gifts — but there’s almost always that one moment when we realize we forgot someone on our gift list, and boom — the mad scramble begins.
What can we possibly buy at the last minute that won’t LOOK like we bought it at the last minute? A Starbucks gift card? Some lotto tickets? An IOU for a better present next year? Never fear, because we just happen to have five ideas that you can fulfill super easily, right here in Marina del Rey — and your recipients will think you’re the best gift giver ever.

For the last couple of weeks, all we’ve been thinking of is Thanksgiving: the guest list, the dinner, the pumpkin pie, the dreaded cleanup… and when the sun sets on Thanksgiving eve, what’s next? A nap? Of course you’ll need a nap—you have to wake up at 3 AM to get in line for Black Friday sales!
Unless, of course, you’d rather celebrate the anti-Black Friday, otherwise known as “Buy Nothing Day.” The big advantage of Buy Nothing Day is obvious: You can sleep in!

There’s nothing wrong with a global economy. I mean, who doesn’t like exotic fruit from Brazil or a nicely priced Ikea side table for that guest room. On the other hand, there’s something wonderfully civic-minded about supporting the local economy. Buying from restaurants that use only locally sourced foods, filling your home with furniture that’s been built right in the store’s workshop out back, drinking a cup of java that’s roasted on the premises; that’s home-style goodness right there and there’s really nothing quite like it. Take a look at some businesses in and around Marina del Rey that walk the home-style walk with great success.

If you have ever walked along the wharf at Fisherman’s Village and felt like you were in a time warp—this piece of news is for you: Marina del Rey is about to get a much-needed makeover. The Silicon Beach boom (or as the Los Angeles Business Journal recently put it, “an influx of technology and creative businesses on the Westside”) is fueling major redevelopment in the Marina. Just what kind of development are we talking about? A rehab of Fisherman’s Village retail center and the Marina West Shopping Center—both of which are due to start construction next year.

As we all know, living in the Marina has its perks: beautiful coastal views of the Pacific Ocean, endless recreational activities, close proximity to Venice and Santa Monica beaches, constant sunshine and near perfect coastal weather. But up until now residents in search of fresh, seasonally-grown fruits and vegetables have had to either go to Mar Vista, Playa Vista or Santa Monica. Enter the Del Rey Farmers Market!
