December 5th, 2017

The winter holiday festivities are already zooming into Marina del Rey and trust us, you don’t want to miss a second of the festivities. So, this Saturday, December 9th, gather up your kids, friends and heck, even your favorite co-workers—and head down to Burton Chace Park for the special Snow Wonder extravaganza, followed by the always-amazing 55th Annual Marina del Rey Holiday Boat Parade.

There should be a great crowd so make sure to head down on the early side to land a prime viewing spot for the evening’s fireworks display and boat parade.

Now let’s get down to the details so you can start planning your Saturday. Here’s the low-down:

Snow Wonder at Burton Chace Park gets underway at noon on Saturday (so you have plenty of time to grab brunch at SALT or Whiskey Red’s first!), and it’s going to be six hours of total winter fun. First off, the park will be twinkling with beautiful holiday lights that will keep the park aglow for the whole month of December—which is just plain festive and awesome. And, for Snow Wonder only, there will be 80 tons of REAL SNOW packed into a super cool sledding hill and dusted over a pine forest. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? Make sure your kiddos are dressed appropriately for the snow. They’ll have sled disks you can use, or you can bring your own.

As if that’s not enough to keep us all blissfully smiling, the park will have tons of activities for kids and adults, like crafts, face painting, a DJ and plenty of entertainment, including the 1950s-style holiday rock of the Wonderelles. Food trucks will also be on-site in case you get hungry. The event is totally free to attend, but you’ll need to get a wristband to participate in the activities. Register for it online beforehand to save some time.

Once everyone’s tuckered out (hopefully by 5:55 pm—fireworks time), you can sit back, look up to the sky and enjoy the spectacular fireworks display. (Remember, if you’re bringing your pup along to the Snow Wonder event, you may want to get him/her home before the fireworks begin!)

Then at 6 pm, the Annual Holiday Boat Parade starts! Since we’re proud to be “Firstmate” sponsors of the legendary event this year, we’re extra excited to share all of the details with you. As soon as the fireworks display ends, the boat parade participants in all of their incredible decorating glory will start circling the Marina’s main channel. They make a pass at least a couple of times—so as long as you’re by the basins, you should be able to enjoy the show just fine. Judging takes place throughout the parade route with awards that include Best Overall, Best Power, Best Sail, Best Theme, Best Music, Best Lights and a whole bunch more. Last year’s overall winner is pictured above—#59 Ellis Island, which had a really festive Feliz Navidad theme complete with a live mariachi band on board. We can’t wait to see who the top winner is this year!

Also, while you’re there—make sure to wave to this year’s parade Grand Marshall, Emmy award-winning journalist and news host, Carol Costello. She was a regular face on CNN for years and is now the host of HLN’S “Across America with Carol Costello.”

Where to Watch

Aside from Burton Chace Park, you can enjoy the fireworks and parade from Fisherman’s Village (and restaurants like Whiskey Red’s and Sapori), or if you’re lucky enough to live in a waterfront community like Esprit, you can sit by the firepits and check it out from home!
