Get Your Jollies! 5 Family Friendly Holiday Activities Around Marina del Rey

Even though Winter Solstice is still weeks away, the best of winter is already in play around Marina del Rey. We started out strong with a magical Snow Wonder event at Burton Chace Park last weekend, and now, every one of us is itching for even more winter merriment! Thankfully, the Marina just happens to be central to basically all that’s awesome in the Westside, including the jolliest events both in town and beyond. Here are the December highlights coming up…fill up your calendar pronto!

Dockweiler Youth Center’s Beach Winter Wonderland
December 15

More snow? Yes, please! Just a hop, skip and a jump away, you’ll find a minor white-out happening at Dockweiler Beach from 11 am to 4 pm. Bring the kids there on Saturday for a free snow day and enjoy winter activities (you know—sledding, snowman building, etc.), plus a bouncy house and more! It’s totally free to attend but do yourself a favor and register ahead of time on Event Brite to avoid long “liability waiver” lines.

“The Santa Claus” at Burton Chace Park
December 15

After you frolic in the Dockweiler snow, head back to the Marina’s Burton Chace Park for a 6 pm screening of the Tim Allen classic—“The Santa Claus.” After you laugh your way through 97 minutes of holiday hilarity, mellow out with a leisurely stroll through those gorgeous, twinkling Marina Lights.

Santa Photo Ops at Santa Monica Place
Every day until Xmas

Santa lovers—don’t forget to get your picture taken with the big man himself up at Santa Monica Place. He’s offering photo ops for humans every day between 10 am and 8 pm…and on December 12th and the 19th, it’s Santa Pet Photo time between 5 pm and 8 pm (dogs and cats only). Pro tip: Dash ahead of the giant photo line by reserving a time slot beforehand.

41st Annual Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run
December 15th

The annual Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run is back this year with major fun for the whole family. Dress up in your favorite holiday costume and take your mark this Saturday for the 5K and 10K races, both starting on Barnard Way, right near the intersection of Ocean Park Blvd. For the first time ever, there will be snow at the finish line at Windward Plaza—which totally ups the fun quota. Plus, there will be a special Wonderful Halos Kids Fun Run for children from 1 to 12 years old starting at 10 am! Plan to make a day of it because the finish line will also be the site of a family friendly festival with music, costume contests, holiday inflatables, food and a lot more. To participate in the races, register right now!

Photos with the Holiday Mermaids
December 14 and December 21

This Friday (December 14th) and next Friday (December 21st), you can jet up to the Santa Monica Pier to get your kids’ Christmas photos taken coastal style—with Holiday Mermaids! Photos will be available between 3 pm and 7 pm—and if you’re there at 4 pm, your little ones won’t want to miss story time with the Santa Monica Public Library.
