It’s National Picnic Month, Marina del Rey! August is here and summer is in its prime, which means it’s the perfect time to honor this great, outdoor tradition. We have so many awesome spots to picnic in and around town, like Burton Chace Park, Mother’s Beach, Del Rey Lagoon, Santa Monica’s Palisades Park or even Venice Beach (with its endless entertainment!). Heck, if you live at one of the Marina’s gorgeous waterfront communities, you can even picnic poolside (just remember, no glass containers)!

So, there are your can’t-go-wrong picnic setting considerations. But how about the picnic itself? Are you going to pack some PB&J and call it a day? Or opt for something a little more decadent from one of the irresistible carryout dining destinations nearby? If you prefer the latter (aka: the easy route), we have some ideas to help you out. Here are five of the best picnic-satisfying restaurants to try for your National Picnic Month outing. Cheers!

4724 Admiralty Way, Marina Del Rey

Fresh, delicious Mendocino Farms has something for everyone, making it one of the best places you could choose for your picnic fixings. If you’re having at least six people join you for your outing, their Picnic Box Lunch off the catering menu (Classic is $11.95/Gourmet is a dollar more) is totally the way to go. You get one of their outstanding gourmet sandwiches like their vegan BBQ Tempeh Picnic Sandwich or the traditional Farm Club, and top it off with chips and a cookie (plus gourmet grain salad with the Gourmet lunch). For a more intimate picnic, just stop in and order your favorites, plop them in your picnic baskets and go!

546-548 Washington Blvd., Marina del Rey

Noah’s also has individual boxed lunches available for pick-up (call ahead to order at 310.574.1155) that are pretty darn good! Choose from their lunch or salad box and enjoy favorites like the Turkey Avocado Club or Hummus Veg Out for around $9.49. They come with potato salad, a crispy pickle and for your sugar pleasure — a gourmet cookie. Perfect picnic fare, right?

4451 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey

Add a little fabulous to your picnic spread with a Café del Rey food bonanza. Think out of the box — like their Cheese & Charcuterie appetizer, chilled Tiger Shrimp (yes, bring some cooler packs!) or Margherita Flatbread. This is the kind of lunch that you could complement beautifully with a sparkling cider or a nice chilled Pinot Grigio — so do it up right, friends!

303 Culver Boulevard, Playa Del Rey

Asian-style picnic food — ASAP, please! Oh yes, get a to-go Banh Mi order from Playa del Rey’s favorite Vietnamese joint and you’ll be totally set in the yummy department. Try their Shaking Cheesesteak ($13) for some serious decadence or go lighter with their Vegetarian ($11) Bahn Mi (both served on French Baguettes).

8501 Pershing Dr., Playa Del Rey

Just a few miles from the Marina is the much-loved Del Rey Deli Company, known for their maddeningly good sandwiches. Get some carryout and head back to Burton Chace Park or, if you just can’t wait to munch down, spread your blanket right down by Ballona Creek at the Sport Park. Before you make that choice, though — here’s the more important decision: what should you eat? Maybe start with the cheese plate, and then move on to something fabulous like the Salmon BLT with house-cured salmon and caper mayonnaise OR the Veggie with olive spread, mozzarella, Portobello and tomato. You can also build your own masterpiece with favorites like spicy turkey, roast beef, pastrami, horseradish-style cheese, plus a great array of fresh breads (including gluten-free).
