Summer Weekend To-Do List: July 29-31, 2011

Summer concerts, swing dancing, farmer’s markets and food tours, oh my! Here’s your summer weekend to-do list for July 29-31, 2011.  Enjoy yet another Marina del Rey weekend.

FRIDAY, JULY 29

1. House Music at Glow Bar

If you’re in the mood for deep house grooves tonight, come to Glow Ultra Lounge at the Marriott on Admiralty Way for music from DJ Lee Dyson. Click here to reserve your spot or call (310) 578-4152.

2. Swing Dancing at Rusty’s

The Brown Derby might be closed, but there’s always swing dancing at Rusty’s in Playa del Rey (Rusty’s is held at the Elks Lodge.) You’ll have you need for a night out in full swing: 2,300 square foot dance floor, bar and lounge, air conditioning and it’s not far from your own pad. Tickets cost $15 at the door, or you can buy them online.

SATURDAY, JULY 30

3. Farmer’s Market

Why not venture over to Playa Vista for fresh fruits, veggies and flowers from the best California farms on Saturday? You’ll also find tasty treats including omelettes, waffles, crepes, pastries, fresh breads, fresh fish, hummus, tamales, stone ground chocolate and more. Yum! The Farmer’s Market opens at 9 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. Here’s the address: 6400 Seabluff Drive.

4. Tito Puente Jr. at Burton Chace Park

Tito Puente, Jr. and his orchestra will ignite the stage at Burton Chace Park in a spirited performance of the Afro-Cuban rhythms and Latin jazz made famous by the original “King of Mambo,” Tito Puente. Begins at 7 p.m., lasting approx. two hours. Make sure to dress for cool evening weather and bring lawn chairs, blankets and an appetite for the park cafe! Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way.

5. Jimbo Ross & The Bodacious Blues Band at Fisherman’s Village

Don’t miss Jimbo Ross & The Bodacious Blues Band playing “happy blues” on the electric viola at Fisherman’s Village (in the plaza near the lighthouse) from 2-5 p.m. Admission is free.

6. Santa Monica Food Tour

Every once in a while one must venture beyond the Marina for fun and food—but luckily for residents of Esprit, Bar Harbor, The Tides and Waters Edge at Marina Harbor, or The Villa at Marina Harbor, they don’t have to go far this weekend. Here’s an event after a Westside foodie’s heart: a 3.5 hour tour of six Santa Monica restaurants like the landmark Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery (which was recently featured on the Food Network’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate.” The tour starts at 2:30, at the corner of 2nd and Arizona, with the grand finale at Pourtal at 5:30. SUNDAY, JULY 31


7. Russ Lesser & Thin Ice at
Fisherman’s Village

Russ Lesser & Thin Ice will be playing their eclectic mix of Country, Folk and Rock at Fisherman’s Village plaza on Sunday. Admission is free, from 2-5 p.m.

8. Platinum Rockstars at Playa Vista

Bring low chairs and blankets for outdoor seating in nearby Playa Vista for the Platinum Rockstars’ high intensity 70s and 80s rock tribute show, featuring tributes to Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, The Who and Boston among many more. You can also take the free Beach Shuttle from Marina del Rey to the event. Concert Park, 13020 Pacific Promenade.  5 – 6:30 p.m.  Admission is free.
