Supporting American Heart Month in Marina del Rey

Pantone’s 2017 color of the year may be in a shade of green — but when February comes around, it’s all about RED, people. Because (in case you didn’t know), this month happens to be American Heart Month, where the nation shines a light on cardiovascular health. In Marina del Rey, keeping our cardio powering on should be pretty easy with all of the outdoor activities happening around town — but we’ve all been there when work gets busy, life gets hectic and we’re just not taking care of ourselves as well as we should be. That’s why it’s so important to talk about cardiovascular health, and American Heart Month starts the conversation and gets us thinking about what we can do for ourselves and others.

Here are a few ideas to make the most of this month (and keep it going!).

GO FOR HEALTHIER MENU OPTIONS

Eating healthier is a no-brainer when it comes to heart-health and you can find really good options at just about every restaurant in and around the Marina. Mendocino Farms’ Avocado & Quinoa Superfood Ensalada, for example, is bursting with good stuff like kale, quinoa, millet and black beans. Then there’s Café del Rey’s King Salmon — one of the best sources of Omega 3 right there! Tony P’s has heart-healthy items marked right on the menu like the Cilantro-Lime Char-Broiled Chicken Breast Platter, while the legendary Chart House offers your choice of fish simply grilled, seared, baked or blackened, or you can get the Chart House Salad Bar (just don’t go for the creamy dressings or overindulge in the croutons, cream-based salad mixes, etc.). Even the decadent Cast & Plow restaurant has some fabulously nutritious items on their dinner menu, including the Red Quinoa Bowl and the Petaluma Chicken Breast.

SMOKERS — NEVER QUIT QUITTING

The fact is: cigarettes just aren’t a part of a heart-healthy lifestyle. And if you’re a smoker, trying to quit is the best thing you can do for your body. American Heart Month is the perfect time to make a go of it — and if at first you don’t succeed…try, try again! There are so many resources out there that can help you kick the habit so check them out. And if you have a friend or family member who is trying to quit, remember it’s not easy so give them your support. Just remind them — life in Marina del Rey can be even sweeter when you’re smoke-free and feeling great!

DONATE

Donating money, items, or your valuable time can make a major difference. A lot of companies have a matching gift program so if you want to get involved in a big way, find out if yours will join the cause!
